iVPN is a Malta based VPN provider offering a variety of plans all based on length of time. They also offer an interesting one off subscription which allows a user to have access for a single use but at significant cost. The obvious benefit of this provider not being located in the US is that they can offer a greater level of anonymity than can be offered by any US based providers. For additional security and anonymity they also accept payment in the form of bit coins which can further ensure anonymity.
Security and Encryption
iVPN offers a choice of OpenVPN, L2TP, and PPTP options and encryptiong up to 256 bit when available. They also offer a proprietary option called Multi hop which routes your signal through an additional server for an even greater level of anonymity. Unfortunately this option doesn’t work as well as you would hope which can make the fairly high cost seem unbalanced. It would seem as though iVPN is marketing itself largely on the basis of security and privacy and does have a well defined user policy and promises to protect the privacy of its customers.
How Fast Is It?
iVPN seems to be fairly competitive in terms of speed in comparison with many other VPN providers. Most users will see a an insignificant loss of speed which is to be expected when connecting through additional sources. When the multi hop function did manage to connect, the speeds were significantly lower making that proprietary technology largely useless. It should be noted that there was more than significant drop in speeds when connecting to this VPN via mobile devices. If you had planned to mostly use this VPN on your iPhone it may not be the provider for you.
The customer service for iVPN consists of a knowledge base that has former questions and answers posted. The database is searchable and should be able to answer most questions. They also us a support ticket system with an average response time within one day. There was no telephone number to speak with an actual representative.
What Will It Cost Me?
The pricing for iVPN’s services is fairly standard to what most providers offer with one exception. They offer a single, one-off use for 20 dollars which is very pricey but may have a use for some individuals. As is standard, the monthly cost is discounted when purchasing in six or twelve month increments. The overall prices of iVPN’s packages trend towards the higher end of the spectrum in comparison to some others.
