Setting up VPN on Windows 2000 & XP

  • The next step would be to choose the type of protocol. In the case of Windows 2000, TCP/IP would be the default protocol, unless you have other protocols installed in the system. Click on ‘Next’ after that.
  • Choose the adapter settings in order to ensure security. VPN adapter settings would add protection to the user. Click ‘Next’ after that.
  • IP address assignment is the next step. In this step, the user needs to choose either Automatic DHCP server or choose from a specified range of addresses. Choose the option you want to and click ‘Next’.
  • Address range assignment would be the next step. Select an address range and click on Next.
  • Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service is one of the services offered only by Windows 2000. The user could administer user accounts from a remote location using this option. Select, ‘No, I don’t want to set up this server to use RADIUS now’ and then click on Next.
  • User accessibility would be the next step. This is totally left to the subscriber to choose whether they want to allow access to other users or not. They could choose based on their network.
  • Remote client server Windows VPN setup is done. New connection Wizard is the next step.
  • Click on the option to create a new connection. Select the suitable option and click on Next. Network connection type can be, ‘Connect to the network at my workplace’.
  • In the following Network Connection screen, select Virtual Private Network connection and click on Next.
  • Enter the account credentials in the following page and setup the new Windows VPN Enter the username, password and click on Connect to establish the Windows VPN connection.

Windows VPN connection in Windows XP professional

Windows VPN setup procedure on Windows XP works similar to that of most of the new connection setup procedure. ‘New Connection Wizard’ should be selected, which can be found in the Control Panel, under the option of ‘Networks and Internet’.

  • Select the option of ‘Create a new connection’ and in the resulting pop-up menu, select Next to start the Windows VPN setup procedure.
  • Option of ‘Connect to the network at my workplace’ should be selected. Click Next after that.
  • From the list, select ‘Virtual Private Network’ and click on Next.
  • Description name should be entered in the next step. Enter a Description name and this name should be easy to remember, as far as the subscriber is concerned. Click on Next.
  • The option of either ‘Automatically dial the initial connection’ or ‘Do not dial the initial connection’ should be selected based on the type of internet connection. For dial-ups, the former option should be chosen and for the rest, choose the latter one.
  • IP address of the VPN server should be entered in the respective slot. This would be provided by the VPN service provider based on the server chosen by the subscriber.
  • Those who want to create a shortcut for the new Windows VPN connection that is setup now, click ‘Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop’. Click on Finish and with that, the process to setup Windows VPN is complete.
  • Connect to the VPN network by entering the username and password. Subscribers having problems with the VPN connection can contact the customer support officials of the service provider. They would help the subscriber in resolving all the problems related to the setup procedure.
