Chromebook VPN – Top 5 VPN For Chromebook

Chromebook is a new type of computer that has an operating system called Google Chrome OS. Some Samsung and Acer computers have been installing this OS, but the system is different than many that are currently being used. Instead of using applications that are located on the computer itself, Chromebooks use applications that are made available online. This minimizes the amount of space your computers needs to keep and store typical applications of Windows or Apple, which are located on the computers themselves.

The problem with Chromebooks is that the original computers did not offer the ability to connect to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), but Google has made some adjustments to their programs so users can now connect to the tunneling protocol L2TP with a pre-shared key. According to the Chromebook faqs found in Google Chrome, Google is working very hard to update their systems and allow users to connect to VPN services of any type. Since the OS automatically updates every few weeks, current users will automatically receive this updated software and will be able to connect to any VPN service.

However, current users can connect their Chromebook to a VPN that offers the L2TP/IPsec protocol, but only to VPN services that offer this protocol. Any other VPN that does not offer this specific protocol cannot be connected to a service.

Setting Up a Chromebook VPN

Since you can only connect to VPNs that have L2TP, you can follow these steps to make the connection from your Chromebook to the VPN system.

  • Tap the Network icon, it looks like a signal at the top right-hand corner
  • A new menu will appear and you will tap Add Private Network
  • A new box will appear with the set up for L2TP

In this new box, you will have to enter the following information provided by the VPN provider you setup your account with.

  • Server Host Name (Provided by VPN service)
  • Service Name (One you pick to identify this connection method)
  • Pre-Shared Key, or PSK (Provided by VPN service)
  • Your VPN Account User Name
  • Your VPN Account Password

If you have set up a L2TP VPN service on your iPhone or iPad, then the procedure is very similar. An L2TP VPN service is much more secure than a PPTP VPN service. This type of protocol will protect your Chromebook from any hacking software and even allow you to bypass any censorship software.
